The lumpfish make me happy. They are lumpy and odd, much like the journey of life. I am enjoying embedding glass into the piece because the reflective nature makes it ever active in the present while bound to the tapestry of time, of ancient music paper. All that love contained in the cherished paper lives on in the dream of reminding us that we are all connected and that our underwater relatives need us to sing songs for them. Songs of acknowledgement and healing. I also chose to embed clay lumps along his spine, tying the tradition of clay to that of paper. The merging of all three materials is indeed part of the new song being sung in my work. I have named him for the master musician, Dr. Lonnie Smith. I was delighted to discover him and his astonishing body of work recently and am electrified by this musical discovery, which is echoed in my electrifying sculptural journey of combining materials.
